INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELLING, THE HEAD, HEART AND SOUL APPROACH

This workshop is ideal for individuals wanting to change careers, learn more about the counselling business, or working their way towards various levels of addiction certification.

Attendees are provided with an overview of the Head, Heart & Soul Model of Counselling.  Various addiction treatment modalities are explored and personal belief systems relating to addiction and client behavior are investigated.  We also discuss the roles that grieving and religious beliefs play in a client’s recovery.  Finally, specific ‘active listening’ communication tools are taught and demonstrated.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING, THE HEAD, HEART AND SOUL APPROACH

This workshop provides a more in-depth examination of the Head, Heart & Soul Approach to Counselling.  What are the components of the model?  How is it used?  How does it engage clients in their own healing process and can it really be used with such a wide variety of clientele?

All of these questions are answered.  The real power of this concept will be experienced as its principles are explained.  In our teaching experience, attendees of this workshop automatically begin applying the principles of the H, H & S model to themselves first before proceeding onto looking at how it applies to client care.

We also discuss shame binding and its effect on clients.  Issues such as identity scripts are investigated and specifics relating to emotional, physical and sexual abuse are explored.  Lots of discussion and case analysis are major components of this workshop.

    PHARMACOLOGY

Rapidly changing trends in client use of drugs and alcohol make these workshops ‘a must’ for anyone working in the social service arena.  This is also an ideal format for students interested in addiction counselling.

Segmented into various drug categories, attendees will learn about the growing use of oxycontins, crystal meth and ‘methadrone’ (a new street drug making its way to Ontario from eastern Canada).   Stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamines, opium, heroin and designer drugs are explored.

All of the above drug categories include explanations of historical use, how these affect the individual user physiologically, the physical and psychological addictive qualities and withdrawal symptoms for each.

Drugs used to treat specific psychiatric health issues represent another category of this ‘workshop clusters.’  It has become increasingly clear that concurrent disorders are a growing issue for both clients and counsellors.  How psychoactive drugs work, their interactions with other medications and implications for poly drug use are explained.

One group of drugs that will be of special interest to treatment center counsellors involves the ‘Over-the-Counter’ medications that clients use.  Stimulants, weight control products, antihistamines and allergy products are explained.  Caffeine and performance enhancing drugs such as steroids and other stimulants are explained.

THE HOMLESS AND CONCURRENT DISORDERS – THEORY AND PRACTICE

This unique and socially relevant workshop explores the many factors contributing to homelessness, the various types of homelessness that exist today and intervention strategies for each.

Attendees will learn to identify populations at risk for losing their homes and how to differentiate between three identified stages of homelessness.  Effective case management, referral and advocacy are a must for homeless clients. Crisis intervention, addiction issues and the consequences of abuse, neglect and trauma are investigated.

Learning how to deal with the chronic homeless is both challenging and highly rewarding and brings with it the risk of burnout.  How to self identify and deal with this potential hazard is explored.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & THE ADDICTED CLIENT

Many of our clients find themselves entangled with the criminal justice system and need additional support/expertise from their counsellors.  Can you describe the difference between Federal and Provincial Laws that affect police, lawyers and the court process itself?  Do you know the various steps a client will go through from point of arrest to final (possible) sentencing? Your clients will want you to know.

Workshop attendees will explore the present day “War on Drugs’ and take a candid look at the players,  it’s affect on Canadian society and be able to determine if this war is actually being won.

Our workshop spells out crimes directly related to substance abuse and use.  What’s the difference between ‘driving under the influence’ and ‘impaired driving?  What about ‘possession’ and ‘possession for the purpose of….’?    What is the role of new ‘Drug Courts’, how do they work and who qualifies?  All of these are explained in this lively two day seminar!

Attendees also look at the challenges of working with the ‘Negatively Motivated’ client and are shown how the Head, Heart & Soul Approach to Counselling can make the job easier for both counsellor and client.  It is an ideal counselling model for mandated clients (many of whom are resistant) as it points out where the real power sits.  Finally, the principles necessary for effective case management, including the ethical issues for counsellors, are outlined in detail.

A really exciting workshop for anyone working in the social service field!
