The Head, Heart and Soul Approach Introduction to Counselling
by Trish L Scott
Introduction to Counselling
This book, the first in the series is ideal for individuals new to the counselling field and for professionals looking to expand their counselling approach. It can prove useful for counsellors growing tired—an occupational hazard. Sometimes a new perspective is all that is required to re-charge the batteries!
This book offers an in depth look at the principles behind The “Head, Heart and Soul” Approach to Counselling philosophy. Each ‘window’ is explored at length using client situations as examples. You will learn how the three windows are meant to work together and how to identify when ‘something has gone wrong’.
The book also looks at the differences between philosophies with respect to substance dependence. You are invited to explore these options while being aware of your reactions.
We investigate the role of society - issues of grief, religion and spirituality. The book addresses the issue of our actual ‘counselling business’ - integrity, rapport building and confronting among others.
Certified by the CACCF for both ‘core’ and ‘continuing education hours’ (15hours).

The Head, Heart and Soul Approach Individual Counselling
by Trish L Scott
Individual Counselling
This book focuses directly on the business of counselling individuals. It is for those who appreciate that counselling is more than just being a good listener and is a guide on how to sort through the ‘mysteries’ of our clients! It shows how to delight in playing detective!
This book briefly revisits the principles of The “Head, Heart and Soul” Approach to Counselling covered in book one. Yet here we include how ‘human laws’ are formed and explore the impact they have on our clients. We look at ‘natural laws’ and how they can be useful for life giving choices.
We discuss various forms of abuse and look at the legacy of shame left in the wake. Shame is a principle contributor to addictive behavior as well as emotions such as depression and anxiety. Understanding it can provide counsellors with a map for how their clients experience the world and themselves.
Shame changes who our clients are and is a wound like few others. Clients can present as arrogant, selfish, dopey and single minded thinkers, yet this book will help you recognize the ‘face of shame’ those clients carry. Once you truly understand the dynamics of this affect, you will never look at your clients in the same light again. That’s a promise!
Finally we look at the ‘counselling dance’ and show how and when to show leadership in your counselling sessions. While it is our job to maintain control of our sessions, we need to understand when to ‘let go’ and permit the client to take over.
Certified by the CACCF for both ‘core’ and ‘continuing education’ hours (20 hours).

The Head, Heart and Soul Approach Family and Group Counselling
by Trish L Scott
Family and Group Counselling
This is where we take the “Head, Heart and Soul” model and weave it through a family structure. Some family systems are very intellectual in their design; other’s are highly emotional, dramatic and full of chaos. Then there are those where one person is running the show and everybody else falls in line accordingly out of fear.
While any family can be described as a ‘unit’, it is made up of individuals whose job it is to make the unit function. Each family member must contribute certain things in order for it to function. These dynamics are discussed.
Also, family rules are decided by the adults and as such, we start with the challenges of ‘couple counselling’. Working with two people instead of one requires special considerations for the counselor. From here we move on to the ‘codes of conduct’ for families in distress. They typically make choices that fail to bring ‘life’ to the individual players, but rather quite the opposite.
This book also includes an extensive look at how groups function. The similarities and differences to working with a group of people - family members -or strangers brought together with a common purpose. We also look at the life span of groups and illustrate the skills a good facilitator needs to have in their arsenal.
As counsellors, our greatest challenge is to remain impartial and not pick sides. For those of you who have indeed done family counselling or group work, you will realize what a challenge this can be!
This book addresses those challenges and provides a map to keep not only the family or group on track, but also the counsellor!
It is in this therapeutic forum, we are called upon (more than in any other) to become the conductors of our players! It is challenging, exciting and very rewarding work!
